Ioannina: the crossroad of 4 civilizations
VIP CITY TOUR with local certified guides starts from Dodona Oracle where the visitor will have the chance to walk barefoot and feel the energy of the land where the ancient Greeks lived. Marching ahead in history we proceed to Dodona ancient theatre used by the Romans as arena. Leaving Dodona, the visitor follows the path of history which leads them to Byzantine times, revealed in the city castle, where the passage to the Ottoman period is sealed in the city’s two Mosques. Our next stop is in the contemporary Silversmithing Museum, model of extraordinary architectural design where the visitor will experience silversmithing technology in the pre-industrial period and will learn about the extensive history of silverware in Epirus from the 15th century to the 20th. Our tour ends up on the island that lies in the middle of the legendary Pamvotis Lake. On this beautiful island we will have the chance to visit one of the oldest byzantine monasteries with its marvelous frescoes as well as the last refuge of the notorious Ottoman landlord, Ali Pasha.
City life revolves around this romantic, silver-grey lake. Get to know with it by strolling along its banks, take a boat ride, and go fishing or have a drink or a bite on the lakefront. According to geologists at Cambridge University, it was formed between 20,000 and 26,000 years ago.
Dodona ancient theatre
A spectacular narrow valley just 22km southern of Ioannina, the site of Dodoni is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. A centre of worship for the father of gods and men, it is renowned for its oracle believed to be among the oldest ones in the Hellenic world.
The silversmiths’ craft was a great source of wealth and it is part of the cultural heritage of Epirus. Today this art has obtained its space where it can tell its tales, talk about people and keep on forging silver with its hammers. The silversmithing museum is situated in the castle of Ioannina in the western bastion of the north-eastern acropolis (Its Kale).
